The data

The underlying rates come from the European Commission's Taxes in Europe Database. Under Commission Decision 2011/833/EU, content owned by the EU is licensed CC BY 4.0: reuse is allowed, including commercially, provided appropriate credit is given and changes are indicated.

Our change: we reshaped the Commission's SOAP responses into JSON and HTML, split them by commodity code and by country, and added no rates, no interpretation and no corrections of our own. Where a member state wrote a comment, it appears verbatim.

This repository

The scripts, pages and JSON structure are MIT licensed. The data they carry stays CC BY 4.0.

What that means for you

You can download it, mirror it, query it, and build on it, commercially, for free, today. Nothing is gated. The commercial licence is not permission to use the data, because you already have that. It buys a stability guarantee and a support commitment, which are ours to give and are not covered by the Commission's licence.

We say that plainly because a data product that pretends public data is proprietary deserves the scepticism it gets.
